Let’s look at it together
Working out the exact education allowance is not simple – only experts know the ins and outs of it. Don’t worry, though: you will automatically receive the allowance you are entitled to. And, as always: get in touch with your Groeipakket coach if you have any questions.
You yourself can work out the amount you’ll receive in three steps:
Do you know your family’s score? If so, compare your family income with the minimum and maximum thresholds in this table:
|Family score||1/10 of the maximum threshold||Minimum threshold||Maximum threshold|
|0||€ 2.503,12||€ 12.238,08||€ 25.031,23|

If your family income is not higher than the maximum threshold, then you are entitled to an education allowance. You can see what the amount will be in the next step.
If your family income is higher than the maximum threshold, you are unfortunately not entitled to an education allowance.
In this table, you can find the allowance based on the education the student is registered for and whether or not the child is at boarding school:
|Education||Boarding or non-boarding||Minimum allowance||Full allowance||Exceptional allowance|
|Primary education||–||€ 125,41||€ 195,04||€ 253,26|
|Full-time secondary||Non-boarding||€ 242,24||€ 977,60||€ 1.147,84|
|Boarding||€ 626,27||€ 1.607,24||–|
|In the 3rd year of the 3rd level of full-time technical or vocational secondary||Non-boarding||€ 290,80||€ 1.173,24||€ 1.377,56|
|Boarding||€ 751,52||€ 1.928,75||–|
|Training with work experience||–||€ 203,70||€ 556,98||€ 718,54|
|Nursing in higher vocational education (HBO5)||Non-boarding||€ 859,98||€ 1.256,34||–|
|Boarding||€ 859,98||€ 3.773,03||–|
|Married, self-employed or single student||–||€ 738,91||€ 3.387,57||–|
Take another look at the table under step 2 and calculate your education allowance:
- if your income is above the maximum threshold, you will not receive an allowance.
- If your income is the same as the maximum threshold, you will receive the minimum allowance.
- If your income is equal to or less than the minimum threshold, you will receive the full allowance.
- If your income is between the maximum and minimum thresholds, you will receive a partial allowance.
- If your income is less than or equal to 1/10th of the maximum threshold, you may receive an exceptional allowance.
The partial education allowance provides some of the full allowance. The amount depends on your family income. The lower your income, the higher your education allowance.
The formula used to calculate the partial education allowance is:
full allowance X [ maximum threshold – family income / maximum threshold – minimum threshold ]
You will receive the exceptional education allowance if your income is equal to or less than 1/10th of the maximum threshold and at least 70% of your income is made up of replacement income, integration income (or equivalent), income replacement allowance (IVT) and/or money for maintenance.
What if your child is at boarding school?
Students are deemed to be at boarding school if they reside at a boarding school in Flanders for at least 5 months of the school year.
The amount of education allowance for students at boarding school is generally higher than the amount awarded to non-boarding students. You can see this in the table under step 3.
Students who live in dorms for at least 5 months (while their parents continue to live at home) also benefit from the education allowance for students at boarding school. If these circumstances apply to you, please provide us with a copy of your lease agreement.
Students studying abroad are classified as students at boarding school. However, education abroad is only recognised for the purposes of the education allowance in very exceptional circumstances. There should be no equivalent course in Flanders to the one studied abroad.
If you think you are entitled to the education allowance for education at a school located outside Flanders, please contact your Groeipakket coach.
Married, single, or independent student
Married or registered cohabiting students, students living alone, and some students living in an institute have a special status.
They are not included in your family’s score, but they do receive a higher education allowance than students at boarding school or if they are in full-time secondary education. You can see this in the table under step 3.
