What is maternity allowance (birth allowance)?
You will receive a one-off maternity allowance after the birth of the child. You can use it to make the home into which you will welcome your little one nice and cosy.

How do you apply for birth allowance?
In the past, your employer arranged the maternity allowance and child benefit application. You were therefore unable to choose the child benefit fund to which you were affiliated. Since the introduction of the new child benefit, you have a say in this. You can now apply for your maternity allowance or child benefit from the payment issuer of your choice.

When can you apply for your maternity allowance (birth allowance)?
You can apply for the maternity allowance (birth allowance) before the birth. You will receive your birth allowance at the earliest two months before the expected date of birth. Follow the steps in our online tool and apply for the birth allowance quickly and easily.
You can also apply for your maternity allowance/birth allowance after the birth of your child. In that case, please send us the form entitled ‘Proof of birth to obtain birth allowance’. You will receive this document when you arrange the birth declaration of your child with your municipality. You will find all the possible ways to get the birth certificate to us on our contact page.
Who receives the maternity allowance?
The mother always receives the birth allowance, even if the father or co-mother applied for the birth allowance.
What if your pregnancy does not go as expected?
Pregnancy and childbirth don’t always go as you might expect. Sometimes something can go wrong or you may be faced with a surprise you did not expect.
- twins or multiple births. Make sure the physician’s certificate that you attach to your application for the birth allowance states that you are expecting a multiple birth. After the birth, be sure to provide us with the birth certificate to receive the birth allowance for each child.
- A child with a specific support requirement. Report this to our child benefit coach, who will review with you whether you are eligible for care allowance.
- Giving birth abroad. There are many international guidelines that govern the allocation of birth allowance. Contact our child benefit coaches and they will see if you are entitled to maternity allowance or a birth allowance.
- a still-born child. This is a tragic event, but unfortunately it can happen. Please accept our condolences to you and your family. If your pregnancy lasted at least 180 days, you are entitled to a birth allowance. You will receive a certificate from the municipality. It is best to send it to us by e-mail or post.

Pregnant? It’s high time for maternity leave!
Employees and civil servants are entitled to fifteen weeks’ maternity leave. You can take six weeks of this leave before the birth. In any case, it is mandatory to take one week of prenatal leave. If you are a self-employed mother, you can take three to twelve weeks of maternity leave; you choose how much. Read all about maternity leave for self-employed mothers here.

Free service vouchers for self-employed mothers
Are you a self-employed mother and did you pay the minimum contribution of a self-employed person as your main occupation or of a co-working partner? In that case, you are entitled to 105 service vouchers after the birth of your child. MyFamily will be happy to arrange this maternity assistance for you.
You are also entitled to an adoption allowance in the event of adoption.
After the entire adoption procedure has been completed, an adoptive child is a child of the adoptive parents. Just like all other parents, you are entitled to an adoption allowance.

When will I receive the benefit?
The money will be in your account by the 8th of each month. The amount you receive is actually the child benefit of the previous month. Here is an example to clarify this: you will receive the amount for April by 8 May at the latest. We provide an extra payment day every week. This will allow you to receive any overdue money quickly.
If MyFamily pays your child benefit, you can quickly and easily view your payment history via our online portal. You can log in to your own digital file and consult the necessary information there.

I am a foreign national, but the municipality is unable to issue me with a residence card. Will I receive the maternity allowance?
Start at the beginning: apply for your Maternity allowance now. The municipality will often provide you with a digital residence document by e-mail. Send this document to us via email@example.com. We will then look at what the next step should be.
If you hold the nationality of a country within the European Union, you don’t need to send us anything. Once we receive your application for the Startbedrag, we will check your right of residence in the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises (the National Register).
